British chart sensation LEONA LEWIS fought back tears as she performed for NELSON MANDELA at the former South African President’s 90th birthday tribute concert in London on Friday (27Jun08).

The singer joined an all-star line-up, including Amy Winehouse and Razorlight, at the concert in Hyde Park.

Lewis belted out singles Bleeding Love and Better in Time, and confessed to WENN, “It was a really emotional moment for me.

“There were definitely a few tears. My auntie and grandmother would tell me stories about Nelson Mandela. I never dreamed I would be up there singing at his birthday celebration. It was very emotional performing for him.”

Leona Lewis 'making £1m per appearance'

Leona Lewis is being paid £1 million for personal appearances at parties, according to a report.

The singer’s asking price is said to have rocketed since the international success of her album Spirit.

“Leona is one of the most sought-after stars around,” a source told the Daily Mirror. “She has little say in the fee charged - big money sponsors literally name their fee and her management respond accordingly.

“She is adamant much of the profit goes straight back to her favourite charities.”

Love Song:

“Bleeding Love” songstress Leona Lewis would actually prefer there be no bloodletting whatsoever—at least when it comes to what she eats and wears.

“I am vegetarian, so I don’t have clothes, shoes or bags made from leather or suede or any animal products,” says Lewis, who is one of two famous faces voted World’s Sexiest Vegetarian in a poll conducted by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). “I am totally against animal cruelty.”

So who joins the reigning pop princess on a list that includes such past winners as Carrie Underwood, Tobey Maguire and Alicia Silverstone?

None other than Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis.

“I saw some documentary footage of what happens in the factory farming of cows…It sealed the deal,” says Kiedis, who is actually a full-blown vegan.

Good thing he doesn’t sing for the Meat.

Former X-Factor winner Leona Lewis has praised Amy Winehouse, calling the singer “an amazing artist”.

In an interview with Parade, Lewis, who won the 2007 edition of X-Factor, praised Winehouse’s talent but said she was worried about her public image.

“A performer’s privacy is taken away. The media are always there. You can’t make your mistakes in private,” Lewis said.

“I have the advantage of a great support structure. I get honest opinions from my family and friends.

“They aren’t always telling me what I want to hear, but the truth helps keep my head straight.”

Lewis will perform at the same event as Winehouse for the first time later this month.

Both singer’s are billed to appear at Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday celebrations in Hyde Park on June 27th.
